Essay:
This powerful portrait by Stig Hjorth depicts an elderly gentleman seated at close range, his head lowered and his expression absorbed in thought. Rather than presenting the sitter in a formal pose, Hjorth concentrates on psychological presence, creating an image that feels private and introspective.
His eyes are lowered, distancing him from the viewer and giving the portrait an unusually contemplative character. The large hand resting in the foreground reinforces this impression of stillness and inward concentration.
