Essay
Painted in 1943, Sunset in Karelia brings together the elements that give Auer’s northern landscapes their particular character: rugged shoreline, irregular pine trees and the changing light of open water. A rocky promontory extends from the left towards the centre, its rounded boulders forming a gradual passage from the substantial foreground to the distant blue shore. Above it, a slender pine provides the composition’s principal vertical accent. Its branching silhouette interrupts the broad horizontal divisions of water, land and sky, lending an individual presence to a scene otherwise governed by stillness.
Born in Pitkäranta on the northern shores of Lake Ladoga, Auer maintained a close artistic relationship with the landscapes of his native Karelia throughout his career. His training in Helsinki and St Petersburg brought him into contact with both Finnish and Russian artistic traditions. At Pitkäranta, his home and studio became a gathering place for artist friends from both countries. He also acted as their guide, leading painting excursions to the monastery islands of Valamo and the rocky bays of Ladoga. The region was thus both a recurring subject and a setting for artistic exchange.
The date gives the painting a particular place within this biography. After his evacuation from Pitkäranta in 1939, Auer returned with his family during the Continuation War, which began in 1941. He left his home permanently in 1944. This work therefore belongs to that interval of return. Its Karelian subject reflects a connection that remained central to his painting even after displacement. The precise location is not identified, but the conjunction of exposed rock, pine and expansive water accords closely with the landscape that he knew so intimately.
