Essay:
This exceptionally small watercolour by Oskar Bergman transforms a handful of wild flowers into a remarkably rich and decorative composition. Daisylike white blooms, small yellow flowers and delicate blue and violet plants emerge from a dense field of foliage, all set against Bergman’s characteristic cool blue ground.
Despite the miniature scale, the work possesses considerable presence. Bergman uses the transparency of watercolour with great sensitivity, allowing individual flowers to stand out through touches of white, yellow and orange while the surrounding vegetation dissolves into softer blue and green tones. The effect is both intimate and jewel like.
Oskar Bergman is best known for his finely observed Swedish landscapes, particularly scenes from the Stockholm archipelago and the countryside around Saltsjöbaden. His works are admired for their precision, luminous colour and almost meditative stillness. In this miniature, the same sensitivity is directed towards the smallest elements of nature.
