Essay:
In this atmospheric landscape at sunset, Fredrik Lagerström captures a fleeting twilight moment with vivid intensity. The sky is aglow with brilliant gold and amber hues, which are mirrored in a calm stretch of water on the left side of the composition. A narrow brook or stream winds through the middle of the scene, drawing the viewer’s gaze into the depth of the landscape. In the foreground, the stark silhouette of a leafless tree stands against the radiant sky, its dark form accentuating the glow of dusk. The overall tone is tranquil yet mysterious – the contrast between the luminous sky and the encroaching shadows creates a contemplative mood. Painted in 1893, when Lagerström was only nineteen years old, Evening already demonstrates the artist’s keen sensitivity to light, color, and the emotive atmosphere of nature at day’s end.

The Artist
Fredrik Lagerström (1874–1955) was a Swedish painter and draftsman active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He studied at the Konstnärsförbundets målarskola (Artists’ Association painting school) in Stockholm in 1896 and further honed his skills during a stay in Paris in 1911. The Artists’ Association school was a progressive alternative to the Royal Academy, and at the time Anders Zorn was among its instructors. Lagerström’s subjects were diverse – he painted portraits and interior genre scenes in addition to landscapes. He came of age in a generation of Swedish artists deeply interested in capturing mood and atmosphere, which is evident in this sunset scene.

Throughout his career, Lagerström participated in numerous group exhibitions. He exhibited at major art and industry fairs in Sweden, including the 1906 exposition in Norrköping and the 1907 exhibition in Lund. His work also reached an international audience; for example, he is recorded as an exhibiting artist in early 20th-century Munich Secession shows. Interestingly, Fredrik Lagerström was one of twin brothers – his twin, Gustaf Lagerström (1874–1906), was also a painter. Fredrik outlived his brother and continued an active artistic career into the mid-20th century.
