Essay:
Dated 2 June 1902, White Roses is an unusually intimate work by Carl Wilhelmson, executed at an important moment in the development of one of Sweden’s leading painters of the early twentieth century. Best known for his depictions of the people and landscape of the Swedish west coast, Wilhelmson was also an accomplished draughtsman whose art was founded upon close observation and an increasingly refined sense of line, colour and pictorial structure.
Born in Fiskebäckskil in Bohuslän in 1866, Wilhelmson grew up in the coastal environment that would later provide some of his most characteristic subjects. His artistic formation, however, was distinctly international. After studies in Gothenburg he travelled to Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian and encountered the developments of contemporary French painting. His subsequent work combined lessons absorbed abroad with a deeply personal response to Swedish subjects. By the turn of the century he had established a distinctive visual language characterised by clarity of form, luminous colour and an increasing simplification of pictorial detail.
White Roses belongs precisely to this period of consolidation. In 1902 Wilhelmson was thirty five years old and already moving towards the lucid and highly individual style associated with his mature work. The present watercolour reveals these concerns on an exceptionally intimate scale.
Rather than arranging the flowers as a conventional still life, Wilhelmson isolates three white roses upon their long stems. There is no vase, table or interior setting. Instead, the flowers seem to enter the composition from beyond the edges of the sheet. Their slender stems curve across the almost untouched paper, creating an elegant linear structure that is as important to the composition as the flowers themselves.
The technique is remarkably restrained. Fine pencil lines establish the contours of petals, stems and leaves before transparent washes of watercolour are introduced. Greens shift between cool blue green and warmer yellow tones, while touches of ochre and brown describe the stems and the beginning decay of individual leaves. The white roses themselves are largely created through absence. Wilhelmson allows the colour of the paper to provide their fundamental luminosity, defining the petals with delicate outlines and minute touches of pale yellow, blue, violet and brown.
The dating gives this apparently modest study particular interest. It transforms an ephemeral observation of flowers into a document of a single summer day in 1902. Although flowers are not the subject most closely associated with Wilhelmson today, White Roses illuminates qualities fundamental to his art: disciplined observation, sensitivity to natural form, clarity of line and an ability to achieve considerable pictorial presence through restrained means.
