Essay:
This moonlit landscape is a characteristic example of August Lundberg’s restrained modernism. A full moon rises through a silver blue sky crossed by long, dark clouds, illuminating a Swedish landscape. In the foreground, a solitary tree forms the principal vertical element, while a small red building appears below it at the edge of a dark forest.

Lundberg constructs the sky through a dense network of short, visible brushstrokes in grey, turquoise, pale blue and touches of muted red. Against this animated surface, the clouds are reduced to broad horizontal bands of deep blue. The contrast between these two kinds of brushwork gives the sky both movement and structure, while the moon acts as a calm, almost geometric centre.

Born in Stockholm in 1882, August Lundberg studied first at the Technical School and subsequently at Konstnärsförbundets third school between 1905 and 1908. The school brought together many of the young painters who would soon contribute to the breakthrough of Swedish modernism, including Isaac Grünewald, Leander Engström, Arthur Percy and Birger Simonsson. Lundberg therefore developed within one of the most progressive artistic environments in Sweden at the beginning of the twentieth century.

He later continued his artistic development in France and on Corsica, where he encountered contemporary European approaches to colour and form. A documented work from 1914 bears the Corsican place name Sari d’Orcino, confirming the importance of the Mediterranean period within his production. Secondary sources describe Lundberg as belonging to the circle surrounding De unga, although he did not participate in the group’s celebrated public exhibitions.

Lundberg worked principally with landscapes and still lifes. His mature painting is characterised by simplified forms, broad colour areas and a calm, meditative atmosphere. While his generation included artists who embraced increasingly forceful expressionism, Lundberg developed a quieter language. His modernism lies less in distortion than in reduction: landscape is organised into clear planes, limited motifs and carefully balanced colour relationships.
