Condition report:
Recently cleaned by a professional conservator. The painting is in very good condition with clear and fresh colors. Presented in its original frame with an aged patina and minor flaws.
Essay:
This small coastal study presents a quiet Swedish shoreline, where a sandy beach meets a calm expanse of water under a lightly clouded sky. A few seagulls animate the upper part of the composition, while a single wind shaped tree anchors the land to the left. The scene is rendered with swift and confident brushwork, capturing the atmosphere of the Swedish landscape.
Mauritz Lindström is best known for his large scale landscapes, often executed with a strong sense of monumentality. In this intimate panel, however, he demonstrates a different aspect of his artistic practice. The reduced format allows for a more immediate and spontaneous handling, where the motif is distilled to its essential elements of light, color and movement.
