Essay:
This intimate and beautifully observed model study by Olle Hjortzberg reveals a particularly engaging aspect of the Swedish artist's work. Best known for his monumental decorative paintings, religious compositions and still life paintings, Hjortzberg demonstrates here his sensitivity to the human figure through a composition that is both spontaneous and carefully considered.

The painting depicts a seated female nuude, viewed from behind and slightly to the side. Her body turns away from the spectator, her head lowered and her hair gathered into a loose bun. One arm rests against the back of a chair, while the other is raised towards her face. The pose is entirely natural, suggesting a quiet moment of contemplation rather than a formally arranged academic study.

Olle Hjortzberg was born in Stockholm in 1872 and  studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts during the 1890s. His artistic development was subsequently enriched by extensive travels throughout Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, including France, Italy, Greece and Palestine. These journeys brought him into contact with classical art, Renaissance painting and Byzantine decorative traditions, influences that would become central to his mature artistic language.

Hjortzberg developed into one of Sweden's leading decorative painters during the early twentieth century. His monumental commissions included important church interiors, notably the Uppenbarelsekyrkan in Saltsjöbadenn and Engelbrektskyrkan in Stockholm. He was also responsible for the celebrated poster advertising the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm and became an influential teacher at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, where he served as professor and later director.

Although his public reputation rests largely upon these monumental and decorative achievements, Hjortzberg remained an accomplished easel painter. His portraits, figure studies and still lifes demonstrate an interest in direct observation that complements the more formal and stylised qualities of his large-scale commissions.

The present painting is particularly interesting in this context. Here, the decorative ambitions of his public works give way to a more personal investigation of the human figure. The emphasis is not on symbolism or narrative, but on the subtle interplay of posture, light and colour.

Seated Female Nude – Model Study is an accomplished and intimate example of Swedish figurative painting, revealing a quieter and more spontaneous side of an artist otherwise celebrated for his monumental decorative achievements. Its warm palette, confident brushwork and elegant vertical composition make it an especially attractive work for collectors of Scandinavian art and traditional figure painting.
