Essay:
In this intimate self portrait, Niels Holbak presents himself at close range, his shoulders turned slightly and his gaze directed towards the viewer. A pale jacket, white collar and dark bow establish the principal contrasts of the figure. His small moustache and receding hairline are observed with particular attention, while the steady eyes and closed mouth lend the face an expression of quiet concentration. The compact format encourages close looking, and the cropped shoulders bring the encounter into the immediate space of the viewer.

Born in Tistrup in western Jutland, Holbak received a varied artistic education. He studied under Jørgen Hansen in Esbjerg and Sophus Vermehren in Copenhagen before attending the Ateneum art school in Finland in 1909 and 1910. From 1912 to 1914 he trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen under Laurits Tuxen and Peter Rostrup Bøyesen. During these years he supported his winter studies by working as a painter and decorator in the summer. This combination of practical experience and formal instruction provides a useful context for the assured treatment of form and paint evident here.

Holbak settled in Esbjerg in 1914 and became an established figure in its artistic life, working as both painter and teacher. His landscapes, town views and interiors often centre on familiar surroundings and quiet human activity. His attachment to western Jutland also found expression in poetry: he published the dialect collections Imeld-golaw in 1940 and Sownfolkin 1954. These parallel activities suggest an enduring interest in the character of everyday experience. In the present portrait, a similarly attentive approach is directed towards his own appearance.

The painting’s sense of intimacy depends on the relationship between its small scale and the directness of the gaze. The surrounding interior remains close, yet the face commands attention through its carefully balanced light and shadow. The freely painted jacket preserves the movement of the brush beneath the more deliberate scrutiny of the features. Together, these elements give the portrait the immediacy of a sustained encounter between the artist and his own reflection.
