Essay:
In this autumn landscape, dated 1982, Ivan Bergdahl makes the brilliance of birch foliage the point of entry into a scene of rushing water and distant uplands. Slender trunks rise from the lower edge and divide into sinuous branches, their yellow and orange leaves dispersed across the surface in small, emphatic touches. Through this delicate screen, a cascade spreads across the middle of the composition. The contrast between the pale, surging water and the darker pool below gives the painting its central movement.

The title associates the scene with Mårkafallet and Sädvajaure in the Arjeplog area of Swedish Lapland. Sädvajaure, now written Sädvvájávrre in Pite Sámi, is a mountain lake. The surrounding region lies along the meeting of mountain and forest country, with birch woodland, coniferous forest and numerous waterways. This setting gives a specific geographical context to the painting’s autumn colours, exposed rock and energetic current.

Born in Säbrå in 1929, Bergdahl developed his practice through independent study and became closely associated with the landscapes around Härnösand, where he lived beside the Gådeån river. He held his first solo exhibition at Modern konst i hemmiljö in Stockholm in 1962 and received a state cultural grant in 1979. Moving water remained a recurring subject for him. An account published by Region Västernorrland describes his repeated studies of the Gådeån through different seasons and from changing viewpoints; the region acquired one of these paintings in 2020. This continuing attention to a familiar river offers a useful context for the present work and its treatment of current, foam and colour. His paintings are also held in Härnösand’s municipal collection, which presented his work in a memorial exhibition in 2022.

Here the birch branches and the course of the water establish two complementary rhythms: one branching across the foreground, the other carrying the eye through the landscape. Their interaction gives the scene both immediacy and spatial depth. The warm wooden frame echoes the autumn palette, bringing emphasis to the orange foliage and the cool brilliance of the cascade.
