Essay:
This remarkably small landscape by Oskar Bergman demonstrates the artist’s ability to create a complete sense of space and atmosphere within only a ffew centimetres.
A group of trees rises in the foreground beside a stretch of water, while the landscape opens towards distant blue hills. The composition is built from an exceptionally restrained palette of soft greens, muted browns and Bergman’s characteristic clear blues. Small touches of ochre and rust suggest the changing season and lend warmth to the otherwise cool harmony.
Oskar Bergman is especially admired for his finely observed Swedish landscapes and his exceptional sensitivity to light, distance and seasonal atmosphere. His watercolours often combine great precision with an almost meditative stillness, qualities that are fully present here despite the miniature format.
