Essay:
This striking mountain landscape is executed with a raw and highly expressive technique that places emphasis on atmosphere and monumental form rather than descriptive detail. The composition is dominated by a sharply rising mountain mass emerging from a succession of dark rolling hills. Through the restrained palette of black, grey and deep ultramarine blue, the artist achieves a remarkable sense of silence and elemental grandeur.

The work is built up through vigorous layers of chalk and pastel applied in dense directional strokes across the paper surface. Rather than smoothing the medium into soft tonal transitions, the artist allows the texture of the paper and the movement of the hand to remain fully visible. This gives the landscape a tactile and almost sculptural presence. The blue accents running through the mountainside and lower terrain create an unusual chromatic vibration that intensifies the dramatic atmosphere of the scene.

The handling bears certain affinities to the landscape drawings and mixed media works associated with Karl Nordström during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Nordström was one of the leading figures within Swedish landscape painting of his generation and a central member of the influential circle around the Konstnärsförbundet. His art often sought to capture the emotional and structural essence of nature rather than its purely topographical appearance. In both paintings and works on paper he developed a highly personal visual language characterized by broad masses, simplified forms and powerful tonal contrasts.

The present work carries a monogram consisting of a K enclosed within a circular form followed by an N. Considerable research has been undertaken regarding this unusual signature variant. While several documented works by Karl Nordström are known to bear the monogram KN in various configurations, this exact form has not yet been conclusively established within the existing literature. For this reason the work is catalogued conservatively as Circle of Karl Nordström.

Nevertheless, the drawing remains an exceptionally compelling example of Nordic landscape interpretation. The severe mountain motif, combined with the uncompromising and direct technique, gives the composition a distinctly modern quality. The work possesses a dramatic intensity that places it in close dialogue with the expressive tendencies found in Scandinavian landscape art around the turn of the century.

Whether ultimately attributable to Nordström himself or to an artist working closely within his sphere, the drawing stands as a fascinating and visually powerful work on paper.

Condition report
Overall in good condition. The work has been with paper conservator Lotta Möller. Dry cleaning and along the right side the sheet has been extended in order to create a more even format and allow for a better fit within the frame.
