Painted in 1897, when Hilding Werner was only 17 years old, this early watercolour already reveals his sensitivity to atmosphere and light. The composition depicts a sailboat gliding across a calm lake at sunset, with the glowing sky mirrored in the water and the shoreline framed by rocks and pines.
Werner was born in Kårud, Värmland, and trained at Caleb Althin’s painting school in Stockholm. During his studies he supported himself as a caricaturist, and over time he developed into one of the most distinctive painters of his generation. Settling near Hammartjärnet in Stömne, he devoted himself to the landscapes of his native Värmland, capturing their moods and symbolism with a lyrical touch.
Preserved in its original frame (with minor flaws), the glass has been replaced with UV-protective glass for conservation.
