The waterfront forms a narrow band high in the composition, with warm façades and dark roofs rising above an extensive foreground of pale blue water. Slender vertical accents punctuate the skyline and reappear as elongated reflections below. By allowing the water to occupy most of the picture, Lindström gives this small painting an unexpected breadth and a sustained sense of stillness.

Colour establishes the relationship between the distant shore and the open water. Ochre, salmon pink and muted red passages bring warmth to the buildings, while touches of dark green gather along the waterfront. Their reflections soften into lavender and silvery grey, merging with the cool tones of the foreground. The sky is painted in restrained shades of grey with a faint rose cast. Across this limited range, small changes in warmth and intensity are sufficient to suggest distance, light and the reflective surface of the water.

The date places the work at the beginning of Lindström’s public career. In April 1894, the year he turned twenty, he and Axel Erdmann made their exhibition debut at Konstnärsförbundet’s exhibition. Lindström had studied at the association’s school in Stockholm from 1892 to 1894, where Richard Bergh encouraged his development, and continued at Valand in Gothenburg under Carl Larsson during 1894 and 1895. Stockholm was his birthplace, and this view reveals an early interest in the waterways of his native city. His move to Rackstad outside Arvika in 1903, and his subsequent association with the landscape of Värmland, lay almost a decade ahead.

Within the context of Swedish painting of the 1890s, a useful comparison is Eugène Jansson’s Riddarfjärden, Stockholmof 1898, now in Nationalmuseum. Jansson explored the subject through deep blues and purples, using the water and distant city to create an enveloping atmosphere. Lindström’s smaller study offers a paler harmony in which warm façades remain luminous against the cool water. Both paintings demonstrate the expressive possibilities of Stockholm’s waterfront, with reflections and tonal relationships determining the mood of the view.

The restraint of Lindström’s composition gives particular value to each touch of colour. The distant shore remains firmly placed, yet its reflection dissolves into the water, sustaining the painting’s delicate balance between the solidity of the city and the transience of light.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0115/6005/8976/files/fritz-lindstroem-riddarfjaerden-stockholm-1894-9189652.jpg?v=1792730853
