Lindström concentrates on a short stretch of woodland stream, where the current gathers between stones before breaking into a small cascade in the foreground. The close viewpoint excludes the sky and brings the meeting of water, rock and exposed roots into immediate focus. A tree rising along the right edge anchors the composition, its curving roots echoing the movement of the stream.

Soft, even illumination unifies a rich palette of copper, russet and deep brown. Violet, blue and silvery grey strokes cross the surface of the water, while mossy greens animate the banks. Lindström’s handling gives the stream a palpable rhythm: long strokes describe the smoother stretches, then shorten and curl as the current meets the rocks. Raised ridges of paint catch the light across the foreground cascade, making the physical texture of the surface part of the depiction of movement.a

Painted in 1907, the work belongs to the early years of Lindström’s association with the artists around Lake Racken. He had moved to Rackstad outside Arvika in 1903, after training at Konstnärsförbundet’s school, at Valand under Carl Larsson and in Copenhagen under Kristian Zahrtmann. The Värmland landscape became a lasting source of inspiration. His increasingly vigorous handling and interest in saturated colour found particular scope in woodland subjects, where the structure of trees and banks could be combined with the changing appearance of water.

A revealing comparison is provided by Vattendrag i solljus (Stream in Sunlight), an oil on wooden panel measuring 30 × 37 cm, sold at Karlstad Hammarö Auktionsverk on 7 December 2025. Both paintings organise a closely framed woodland scene around copper and violet reflections, with upright trunks interrupting the movement of the water. In the sunlit painting, broad reflections and an illuminated bank create strong divisions of light and shadow. Here, the more diffuse illumination and denser, broken brushwork concentrate attention on the turbulent passage of water around stones.

https://www.classicartworks.com/fr/products/fritz-lindstrom-flowing-water-study-in-overcast-weather-1907
