Rather than recording architecture, monuments or everyday life, Tryggelin turned his attention almost entirely towards the sky, producing a remarkably modern study of light, colour and atmosphere.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition is reduced to a few broad passages of colour. An intense blue occupies the upper half of the sheet, meeting a vast bank of clouds in delicate shades of pale pink, apricot and violet. Darker blue shadows float within the clouds, giving them volume while preserving the extraordinary transparency particular to the watercolour medium.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eErik Tryggelin received his artistic education at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and subsequently continued his studies abroad, including an important period in Paris. Travel remained central to his artistic development. In 1914 he undertook a journey to Egypt, producing watercolours and studies that record his encounter with the dramatically different light and colour of North Africa.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCompared with the carefully observed streets and architectural views for which Tryggelin is often known, this small watercolour reveals a freer and more experimental side of the artist. There is no narrative and almost no drawing in the conventional sense.
