It has inspired art, music and literature for centuries; from famous paintings and sculptures to the play of Oscar Wilde and ground-breaking opera of Richard Strauss. In this painting made after Milanese artist Andrea Solario (1460–1524), we see one of the most emotionally charged events of the story interpreted with all the mastery of the Italian Renaissance.

Born in Milan, he received his earliest training from his older brother Cristoforo Solari and together they worked at the great Milan Cathedral, itself an iconic masterpiece, and the monastery complex Certosa di Pavia. Works of Solario can be seen in museums in Venice, Milan, New York and Paris, where “Virgin of the Green Cushion” in the Louvre belong to his most celebrated works. After settling in England in 1716 he became a favorite of Frederick, Prince of Wales, famous for his patronage of art and culture. The appreciation of Mercier was expressed in several high-ranking titles at the princely court such as Principal Painter to the Prince, Gentleman Page of the Bedchamber and Library Keeper. After a series of jealous incidents and intrigues with his rivals at the court, Mercier fell out of favor in the 1730s and his royal association came to an end in what has been described in scandalous circumstances. However, this did not end his career. Instead he later abandoned royal portraiture and re-established himself in the genre of fancy pictures – motifs of domestic scenes and people engaged in everyday life situations. Eventually, Mercier found new patrons and a large audience both with his new style of painting and numerous reproductions made with mezzotint engravings. The faint light in the midst of evening darkness, the intimate interaction between the unassuming girl and the tenderly curious boy and complete lack of any glamorous or fanciful elements that were to so typical for his earlier production indicates an artist with a changed perspective – and perhaps even a deepened insight. Overall, the scene shows that seemingly innocent domestic scenes are in fact traces of a new sensitivity and interest in the intimate, the personal and the private. Despite the slightly idealized faces and neat composition, this painting is far from a onenote sentimental scene. Instead, it reflects a heightened presence into portraying human interaction that still, after more than two hundred and fifty years, enables us to connect with the eye and experience of the 18th century.

The sewing basked further emphasize the domestic character of the scene.

LITERATURE

Waterhouse, Sir Ellis. "English Painting and France in the Eighteenth Century." Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes 15 (1952): 127-128.

Raines, Robert and John Ingamells. Through reproductions and prints the fame of Meissonier spread even wider, and when new major works were exhibited newspapers around Europe were quick to report. Like no one else Meissonier could produce almost cinematic artworks filled with bombastic happenings, calm poetry or psychologically precise portraits; all balancing between an extraordinary sense of detail and striking compositions. Weather he painted battle scenes or portraits, Meissoniers artworks had a curious ability to make the viewer submerged into the scene. Technically, what first seems like an extremely realistic and slightly formal way of painting is on a closer inspection shaped by fast, playful and almost carelessly performed strokes of paint that make the motifs vibrate of life. He was a student of Bartholomeus van Bassen and shared artistic similarities with painters like Hendrik van Steenwijk the younger and others who specialized in interiors, especially of churches. The graphics arts of Hans Vredeman de Vries were another major inspiration that also gave Vucht his understanding of space and perspective. By Vucht’s lifetime, the Dutch Republic had become one of the most powerful nations in the world due to its success in trade, military, science and culture. This allowed an astounding variety of different artistic genres to co-exist, and many of them are still world-famous today. From the increased interest in realism and exact depictions to motifs of mythology, fantasy architecture and idealized worlds, art became an increasingly important method to understand and reflect both the reality and the visions of this period. Van der Vucht certainly belonged to category of vision and dreams and excelled in creating interiors were he effortlessly mixed inspirations from existing buildings, architectural engravings and pattern books, and his own imagination.

From the book” Perspective” by Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527–1606). Surrounding the figures are numerous details and symbols such as the shining brass chandelier in the center; the suggestively painted ornamental embellishments with acanthus scrolls in the friezes and spandrels of the architecture; the dramatic interplay between shadow and light on the floor and in the vaults.

The more time on spend looking on this seemingly serene composition; the more one discovers its complex relationships between movement, space, light and symbolic power.

The striking perspective directs the eye both to the center and beyond; but at the same time invites the viewer to the figures and numerous details. Back then, it was unthinkable to see Meissonier as anything else than one of the most famous and beloved artists alive. His paintings fetched the highest prices and audiences flocked to see his works on exhibitions. Through reproductions and prints the fame of Meissonier spread even wider, and when new major works were exhibited newspapers around Europe was quick to report. Napoleon III employed him as a member of the imperial court to paint military victories and Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, who also collected his works, said that Meissonier was “One of the greatest glories of the entire world”. John Ruskin, one of the most influential art critics of his day, was "marvelling at Meissonier's manual dexterity and eye for fascinating minutiae". So, what was it that captivated the 19th-century audience in the art of Meissonier?

Formally, Meissonier belonged to the academic tradition and is mainly known for his history paintings, motifs of Napoleonic battles and victories, genre pieces and some portraits. He was both a painter and a sculptor, and also an accomplished engraver. But beyond the motifs and techniques there were other, more intangible qualities to his art. Like no one else Meissonier could produce almost cinematic artworks filled with bombastic happenings, calm poetry or psychologically precise portraits; all balancing between an extraordinary sense of detail and striking compositions. He is often compared as an artistic parallel to writer Alexandre Dumas in his unique ability to convey stories of pre-Revolutionary France, with all its honourable chivalry and heroic tales.

Many of his motifs, especially the military scenes, were of great emotional value to the 19th-century audience and filled with symbols and references that have long lost their meaning. Meissonier knew how to set the scene and boil down to the perfect moment in a story where it reached its full dramatic potential. Whether he painted battle scenes or portraits, Meissoniers artworks had a curious ability to make the viewer submerged into the scene. Technically, what first seems like an extremely realistic and slightly formal way of painting is on a closer inspection shaped by fast, playful and almost carelessly performed strokes of paint that make the motifs vibrate of life. His tendency to only paint rather small formats also provided a kind of intimacy even to his more pompous sceneries.

The current sketch " Head of a Soldier" shows how Meissonier masterfully built up the composition with only a few brushstrokes. The man's gaze is determined and radiates self-confidence. A detail with extra fine finesse is the end of the brushstroke that is visible at the bottom right; the stroke goes back and forth almost in a circle until the paint runs out. This technique may look simple but is very difficult to master. Meissonier likely took inspiration for this sketch from Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (called Guercino), who made several similar sketches.

It is currently unknown what specific painting this sketch belong to, but as interest in Meissonier grows more research and comparisons can provide more knowledge in the future. Till then, this sketch remains a fascinating fragment of the working process behind one of the most successful yet forgotten artists of art history.

Title: Head of a Soldier
oil on canvas
signed with monogram EM
canvas dimensions 25.3 x 19,8 cm
frame 40,5 x 36 cm

Provenance:
Schmitz-Laurent (S.V.V.), Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, 28 nov 2004, lot 15, Soldat à la bourguignotte; Drouot Paris, July 2021, Auction Art Rémy Le Fur & Associés, Lot 571.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0115/6005/8976/files/ernest-meissonier-head-of-a-soldier-293424.jpg?v=1715341162
adriaen-van-ostade-follower-of-a-women-dancing
Adriaen van Ostade (follower of) - A Woman Dancing

Adriaen van Ostade (follower of)

A Woman Dancing to the Music from a Violin

oil on oak panel
panel size 10.23 x 15.35 inches (26 x 39 cm)
frame 15.74 x 21.25 inches (40 x 54 cm)
frame included in the price.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0115/6005/8976/files/adriaen-van-ostade-follower-of-a-woman-dancing-860254.jpg?v=1715340968
georg-buchner-portrait-of-a-young-girl
Georg Büchner - Portrait of a Young Girl

Georg Büchner (1858–1914, Germany)

Portrait of a Young Girl

oil on panel
signed Gg. Training initially in his father’s business as a housepainter, it soon became evident that he possessed artistic talent. In 1811 the public was introduced to his artistic endeavours. In that year he made his debut in The Hague at an exhibition of ’Painters and Amateurs’ with three small paintings. Reactions to Schelfhout’s entries and whether or not he sold them, is not known. But from that moment on, it was clear that he must become an artist, although he was already married and father to two daughters.

To further develop his skills as professional painter, he was sent in 1811 to study with the The Hague stage designer J.A.A.H Breckenheimer (1772-1836). This apprenticeship in Breckenheimer’s studio was valuable to his development. There he learned not only to draw and paint motifs such as landscapes, flowers, city scenes and human bodies. Still more important, he was required to make studies of the technical aspects such as perspective and paint preparation. Breckenheimer suggested him to make detailed studies of the great seventeenth-century masters as A. Cuyp and J. van Goyen and encouraged him to wander in the countryside to make sketches. The sketches from this period, mostly in pencil or black chalk, are almost never subjects for paintings, but are preliminary studies which he would adept as a component of a painting. later he made more detailed studies for paintings. Schelfhout remained under the tutelage of Breckenheimer until 1815. Later, when art critics enquired about his artistic education, he even remained reluctant to talk about it. Schelfhout himself thoroughly trivialized the value of his apprenticeship and sometimes he even denied it ever happened.

In the beginning of his artistic career, he mostly used the larger formats for his paintings, later on he used the smaller panels. Schelfhout did not often date his paintings and it is virtually impossible to establish a chronology. Only the crowded people on the frozen rivers give us any idea in which period he painted these winter panoramas. Although he painted many of those winter scenes, he never slipped into repetitiveness, nor did he handle themes at all routinely. Always he elaborated on the same composition form, but he had an impressive store on inventiveness at his command. Comparison of the different winter scenes, result in paintings whose character is completely distinct. The way in which he ordered elements in the space and his myriad ways of lighting the scene, lead to ever-differing outcomes.

The location of the painting, can be located in the surroundings of the city of Dordrecht. Even for the Netherlands a typical place, because it is one of the few places where three rivers cross each other. The “Beneden Merwede”, the “Oude Maas” and “De Noord” come together in the so-called three river point. In a bird's-eye view he painted this location with the skyline of Dordrecht at the horizon. Someone who knows the geographical situation recognises immediately the typical contours of the 'Grote Kerk’. If he has painted this location on the basis of his own observation, or if he was inspired by J. van Goyen or A. Cuyp, who both have made beautiful and important summer panoramas of this scene, it's not to recover. In my opinion he made first of all a sketch in watercolour depicting the same location (image 4 in the report). The technical skills of Schelfhout become visible when all the important so-called vanishing lines have been drawn (image 3 in the report). Those fictious lines are necessary for an artist because he has to transform a three-dimensional space on a flat surface. The craftmanship of Schelfhout becomes also visible in the details. All the skaters and the horizon lay beyond the lower Golden Section. The sharp perception ability of Schelfhout also shows in the lighting and the shadow-parts.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0115/6005/8976/files/andreas-schelfhout-a-winter-scene-with-several-skaters-on-a-sunlit-frozen-estuary-827124.jpg?v=1715341111
frederick-woodhouse-sr-a-gentleman-rider-on-a-horse
Frederick Woodhouse Sr. - A Gentleman Rider on a Horse
Frederick Woodhouse Sr. (Frederick William Woodhouse) 1820-1909

A Gentleman Rider on a Horse

oil on canvas (relined 2021)
canvas dimensions 24.40 x 29.92 inches (62 x 76 cm)
frame 30.31 x 37.00 inches (77 x 94 cm)
signed and dated: Fred.
