Like many of his contemporaries, Stalbemt followed the example of this great role model. At the age of 29 he converted to the Catholic faith. It goes without saying that a painter in Antwerp had to be familiar with the themes of the Christian religion, since it was necessary to fulfill the wishes of his customers. The design of the spatial composition, reminiscent of the early David Vinckboons, which features juxtaposed landscape sections - on the left the dark foreground, on the right the background illuminated by the sun - indicates that this is an early painting, painted during the period from 1605 to 1610. In this painting, Stalbemt reveals himself to be a great artist who was able to skillfully combine different landscape formations such as forest, river and mountains at an early stage of his career. In interlacing all of these landscape parts into one perspective, this composition is very typical of Adriaen van Stalbemt's work.

Literature: Ertz/Nitze-Ertz, Adriaen van Stalbemt, Kritischer Katalog der Gemälde, Zeichnungen und Druckgraphik Lingen 2018.

oil on copper
picture size 8.07 x 9.96 inches (20.5 x 25.3 cm)
frame 14.17 x 15.94 inches (36 x 40.5 cm)
note: Important changes in the composition have been found with an IR camera, please contact us if you want to see the result from those images.

Provenance: Private collection Bavaria (Germany)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0115/6005/8976/files/adriaen-van-stalbemt-abraham-and-the-sacrifice-of-his-son-isaac-370735.jpg?v=1715340961
david-teniers-the-sense-of-touch
David Teniers - The Sense of Touch
David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) Follower of

A Peasant Removing a Plaster: The Sense of Touch

signed T on the table
oil on panel
panel size 7,20 x 5,55 inches (18,3 x 14,4 cm)
frame 11,22 x 9,84 inches (28,5 x 25 cm)
oak frame professionally handmade 2021

Provenance:
Old Christie's stamp on the back;
Private collection Poland;
Desa Auction Poland, 6 October 2020, Lot 55.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0115/6005/8976/files/david-teniers-the-sense-of-touch-248413.jpg?v=1715341257
johan-peter-von-wildenradt-sea-view-from-menton-cote-dazur-france
Johan Peter von Wildenradt - Sea View from Menton, Côte d'Azur, France

Johan Peter von Wildenradt (1861-1904)

Sea View from Menton, Côte d'Azur, France

signed JP.v. In this painting of a seemingly simple peasant scene lies keys to understanding both the imaginative mind of Teniers as well as why this time period produced some of the most iconic works in all of art history.

As indicated by the name, Teniers was more or less born into his profession. As the son of David Teniers the elder, himself a painter who studied under Rubens, the younger David received training in art from a very young age and had no less than three brothers who also became painters. Because of his father’s frequent financial failures that even at times saw him imprisoned, David the younger helped to rescue the family from ruin through painting copies of old masters. Essentially, the young Teniers was confronted with painting as both a passion and creative expression as well as a necessity during difficult times, an experience that would shape much of his capacity and sensitivity in his coming life.

Teniers portayed by his colleague Philip Fruytiers in 1655, at the height of his career and dressed in typical Baroque fashion.

Despite the hardships, the talent and determination of Teniers was recognized and quickly expanded his possibilities. He had already spent time in France and possibly also England when he was hired by his father’s former teacher Rubens to help with a prestigious commission with mythological paintings, now considered lost, for Philip IV the king Spain. In 1644–54 Teniers was appointed dean of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, manifesting his esteemed position within the artistic community. A few years afterwards he took an important step when relocating to Brussels, where Teniers yet again found new career opportunities that would prove to be very successful.

As the keeper of the collections of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, a role similar to what we now refer to as an art advisor, Teniers purchased hundreds of important artworks that manifested the prominent status of the Archduke’s collection while at the same time providing an unusual access to inspiration and knowledge for Teniers himself. Since he kept on painting during the same time, his creative scope must have seemed almost bewildering in the great variety of images and stories that he surrounded himself with.

Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in his Gallery in Brussels, painted by Teniers around 1650. In his impressive repertoire of genres with everything from exquisite royal portraits, interiors, landscapes and history paintings he always added something new and inventive, highlighting the possibilities of art and importance of an experimental and intuitive mind. It is difficult to single out one aspect or genre to summarize his legacy, since it lies much more in the broad virtuosity across many motifs, although he is particularly remembered for farm scenes and meticulously depicted interiors where other paintings and artworks are captured with an astonishing precision. Kask’s approach to this piece is fluid and spontaneous, with broad, swift strokes that lend an air of immediacy to the scene. Much of the canvas remains untouched, its raw state highlighting the areas where Kask chose to concentrate his efforts, thus drawing the viewer's gaze directly to the central action of the ants. This decision to leave the background undefined gives the work a sense of incompleteness, a characteristic that is often celebrated in studies and sketches for its authenticity and connection to the artist's initial spark of inspiration.

Eugen Kask, born on January 18, 1918, in Kiev and passed away on May 11, 1998, in Vimmerby, was an Estonian-Swedish painter of diverse talents. A descendant of an architectural lineage, with his father Kristjan Kask and his own background in architecture and fine arts, Kask brought a structural eye to his compositions. His life, marked by the upheaval of wartime displacement, led him to Sweden where his contributions to art continued to flourish through exhibitions and group showcases. His work spans a variety of subjects from pastoral landscapes to intimate animal studies, each rendered in his chosen mediums of charcoal, oil, or pastel. Beyond the canvas, Kask's creative impulse extended to the intricate craft of goldsmithing, a testament to his versatile artistry.

This particular oil sketch not only represents Kask's skill but also embodies the ethos of his artistry—the balance between the refined and the raw, the complete and the incomplete, the permanent and the transient. This painting, therefore, represents not just Suter's foray into the realm of canvas and color, but also a piece of Swiss art history, woven from the threads of his multifaceted career.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0115/6005/8976/files/ernst-suter-a-lake-view-1930-320437.jpg?v=1715341157
nils-forsberg-oil-sketch-for-gustavus-ii-adolphus-before-the-battle-of-lutzen
Nils Forsberg - Oil Sketch for "Gustavus II Adolphus before the Battle of Lützen"

Nils Forsberg (1842-1934) Swedish

Oil Sketch for the Painting "Gustavus II Adolphus before the Battle of Lützen"

oil on canvas
painted c. 1895-1899
stamp signed on the front and authenticated a tergo
canvas dimensions 18.30 x 24.21 inches (46.5 x 61.5 cm)
frame 22.44 x 28.34 inches (57 x 72 cm)

Essay:
This piece is a oil sketch for the renowned masterpiece 'Gustavus II Adolphus before the Battle of Lützen', currently housed in the Göteborgs Konstmuseum.

The allure of an unfinished oil sketch lies in its ability to offer a rare glimpse into the artist's creative process, revealing the initial conception of the motif. Historically, the spontaneous and often rapid execution of such sketches has fascinated art collectors. During this period, Forsberg honed his craft under the tutelage of the esteemed painter Léon Bonnat. He was inspired by the impressionists, who painted their immediate impressions, that which the eye fastens on in the open air. Dick Beer often depicted nature; studies of trees, shrubbery, vistas or natural phenomena. Other motifs include streets lined with houses. The human figures are often relegated to the background. The vistas are predominantly represented in a range of clear colours in which the motif is accentuated by sharp contours. Here, Dick Beer has also garnered ideas from artists who challenged traditional impressionism, such as Paul Cézanne who, with his geometric landscapes, was a precursor of the cubists. He began his artistic training at Althin’s painting school in Stockholm in 1908 and continued at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1910 until 1912, where his teachers included Gustaf Cederström, Oscar Björck and Alfred Bergström. In September 1912 he left Sweden for Paris, rented a studio near Montparnasse, and followed instruction at the Académies Colarossi and Grande Chaumière.

The years that followed were decisive for his development. In 1913 he worked in Pont Aven and held his first solo exhibition in Stockholm under the French title Exposition des tableaux de Bretagne et autour de Paris. In 1914 he undertook an extended study journey through Italy, Tunisia, Morocco and Spain, returning thereafter to Paris. The outbreak of war marked a profound rupture. Beer volunteered for the French Foreign Legion and in 1915 suffered severe head injuries in a grenade explosion, resulting in permanent hearing loss and nervous complications that would affect him for the rest of his life.

After the war his art underwent a marked transformation. Around 1918 and 1919 Beer began to experiment with cubist painting, creating a number of ambitious large scale compositions. Unlike a purely analytic cubism, his was personal, emotional and highly charged with movement. He absorbed the formal language of faceting and structural fragmentation, yet retained a strong attachment to the human figure and to psychological presence. During the years that followed in Paris, he was instructed by André Lhote, whose studio offered an environment in which modern form could be explored freely while still subject to disciplined critique.

The present portrait of Gabriele Varese belongs to this crucial moment in Beer’s career. Varese was part of Beer’s Paris circle, which also included Manuel Ortiz de Zárate and the sculptor Frédéric de Fréminville. Several of these friends were portrayed by Beer, and the present work is among the most compelling examples of his portraiture from the immediate postwar years. The sitter is shown in Italian uniform, his figure constructed through angular, interlocking planes that break the body into sharply defined facets. The treatment of the jacket is especially striking, turning cloth into structure and volume into rhythm.

Yet the painting is far more than a formal exercise. For all its cubist compression, the portrait retains a vivid human immediacy. Varese’s face, turned toward the viewer, carries a direct and searching expression. The hands, tense and active, reinforce the sense of alert presence. Beer’s achievement lies precisely in this balance between formal invention and psychological intensity. He does not dissolve the sitter into abstraction, but rather redefines portraiture through a modern pictorial language.

This portrait should be understood within the broader context of Beer’s international modernism. Active largely in France, and moving between impressionism, pointillism, cubism and later more expressionist and naturalistic modes, he remained difficult to classify within a single national narrative. That complexity may partly explain why he was long overshadowed. Today, however, works such as the present portrait make clear that Beer occupies a distinctive place within early twentieth century Scandinavian modernism. Portrait of Gabriele Varese stands as an important document of his cubist period and of the cosmopolitan milieu in which it was formed.

Sources
Millesgården, Dick Beer – Impressionist & Kubist
Onita Wass, introductory essay and biographical material
Exhibition chronology and family archive material
Norrköpings Konstmuseum and Moderna Museet references to Dick Beer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0115/6005/8976/files/dick-beer-portrait-of-gabriele-varese-487471.jpg?v=1715341228
dick-beer-view-from-a-window-1920
Dick Beer - View From a Window, 1920

Dick Beer (b. Dick Beer was influenced by various modernistic expressions. In Paris, the first wave of cubism, led by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, was established. It was a controversial artistic style. There was a heated debate about cubism, in which the artist broke up the motif into smaller components, sometimes called facets, in order to rebuild it on the flat surface of the pictorial plane. This manner of painting represented a complete break with preceding pictorial conventions and naturalistic painting.

Cubism was governed by theory, not practice, and critics claimed that the style was too intellectual for the general public and they predicted that it would disappear and that artists would return to a rather more classic expression.

The theories surrounding cubism and its various expressions opened up for a number of reinterpretations in the 1910s. Dick Beer was well aware of the cubist discussions. He embraced the ideas but created a varied, personal and emotive cubism in the years around 1918. His painting was often an explosive discharge with playful characteristics and a futuristic dynamism which accentuated the painting’s inherent speed and movement, as for example his works “Dancer” and “The Toy Box”. He also experimented with geometric compositions of buildings and landscapes, which were reminiscent of Paul Cézanne’s more cubic landscapes. Here, Beer’s colours were often muted, in blue, brown and red hues. He frequently returned to earlier motifs and reworked his canvases into a cubist style, as in “Dancer tying her shoes” and “Seated dancer“.

Contemporary art critics were appalled and Beer had to endure severe criticism. At one point, the artist published a reply in the daily Politiken, 1919, where he described his view on art:

“... because love for and understanding of art, ‘l’art pour l’art’, is not easy to achieve, and neither is it easy to comprehend the different movements’ or schools’ origin, goals, characteristic endeavours, etc. – These international phenomena require not only theoretical and art historical knowledge but (...) the ability to empathise with and feel for art, as its practitioners do”.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0115/6005/8976/files/dick-beer-portrait-of-dr-mens-iii-142810.jpg?v=1715341222
dick-beer-from-paris
Dick Beer - From Paris

Dick Beer (b. Born in Paris, Saint was the son of a jeweler and initially began his career as an apprentice in his father's workshop.
