A gently curving road or track enters from the foreground and disappears towards a dense belt of trees, while a low stone wall leads the eye diagonally into the scene. Beyond the woodland, the landscape opens once again into distant fields and low horizons beneath a large sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThunman builds the landscape almost entirely through rhythm. The foreground is lightly described, while the trees are constructed from repeated, looping pencil lines that give each group its own character. Further away, the marks become increasingly restrained. The distant terrain is reduced to long horizontal contours, producing an effective sense of depth with remarkably economical means.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOlof Thunman occupied an unusual position in Swedish cultural life. He was both an artist and a poet, and his visual art shares many qualities with his writing: an attachment to specific places, close observation of the changing landscape and an ability to find significance in apparently modest surroundings.
