The composition is built around an expansive sheet of tranquil water illuminated by the last light of day. Rather than relying on architectural landmarks or dramatic topography, Thörne creates depth through subtle spatial relationships and the careful placement of only a few elements.

A family of waterbirds glides quietly across the foreground, introducing a gentle rhythm to the otherwise still surface. Slightly to the right, a solitary navigation marker rises from the water. More than simply a practical object, it functions as the visual anchor of the composition, establishing perspective while guiding the viewer's eye towards the distant shoreline. The restrained arrangement allows the extraordinary sky to dominate the painting.

The sunset is the true protagonist. Vast cloud formations sweep across the canvas in delicate bands of blue, lavender, rose and warm golden yellow. These colours dissolve almost seamlessly into the calm water below, where the reflections become softer and increasingly atmospheric. The result is an image in which sky and water merge into a single luminous space. Few Swedish landscape painters of the late nineteenth century handled changing light with such sensitivity, and this work ranks among Thörne's finest atmospheric compositions.

Although the precise location has not been identified, the motif appears more closely related to the Swedish coast or archipelago than to one of the artist's inland lakes. The navigation marker, together with the low horizon and broad open water, suggests a navigable waterway, while the distant wooded shoreline remains intentionally generalized. Rather than describing a specific place, Thörne sought to capture a universal Nordic evening, where the fading light becomes the principal subject.

Alfred Thörne studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm under Per Daniel Holm between 1874 and 1880. In 1880 he received the Royal Medal for his painting Sommarmorgon and the following year became an agré of the Academy. A travelling scholarship enabled him to study in Germany, France, Italy and Belgium between 1884 and 1886. These journeys broadened his artistic outlook, yet his mature career remained deeply rooted in Swedish nature, where he developed a highly personal interpretation of landscape founded on careful observation and refined colour harmonies.

Throughout his career Thörne exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and participated in several important international exhibitions, including the Nordic Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1888, the Gothenburg Exhibition of 1891 and the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. He also worked as a drawing instructor and executed public commissions, among them the altarpiece for Vimmerby Church. Today his works are represented in the collections of Nationalmuseum, Nordiska museet, Östergötlands Museum, Norrköpings Konstmuseum, Gävle Museum and Sundsvalls Museum.

The present painting can confidently be placed within the artist's mature period, probably around the turn of the twentieth century. Its scale corresponds closely with several documented landscapes from the 1890s, while its emphasis on atmosphere and transient light relates closely to a number of known exhibited works bearing titles such as Skymning, Tidig morgon, Höstmorgon and Sommarnatt.
